You may have heard people reference Emotional Intelligence or EQ, but do you know how important it really is?  Emotional Intelligence is a type of social intelligence that allows a person to monitor their feelings and emotions to guide their thinking and actions.  High emotional intelligence means that a person can understand their own needs and feelings as well as the needs and feelings of others.

Emotional Intelligence can impact our work performance, physical health, mental health and relationships with others. In a work setting, a highly emotional intelligent person leads and motivates others and excels in their career. A person lacking emotional intelligence will be challenged to perform well with others and make real connections with co-workers. Emotional intelligence has a lot to do with overall likability.

An emotionally intelligent person listens deeply to others, asks questions, and, most importantly, is genuine and honest.

Here are 4 Emotional
Intelligence Skills

  1. Self-Awareness. The ability to recognize your emotions as they happen and understand your general tendencies for responding to different people and situations.

  2. Self-Management. Using awareness of your emotions to choose what you say and do in order to positively direct your behavior.

  3. Social-Awareness. Understanding where the other person is coming from whether you agree or not.

  4. Relationship-Management. Using awareness of other persons’ emotions to choose what you say or do in order to positively direct their behavior.

In the workplace, the most effective people have high levels of cognitive intelligence (IQ) as well as emotional intelligence.  While you can’t do much to increase your overall IQ, there are many things that can be done to increase emotional intelligence.  Many organizations struggling with a workforce lacking emotional intelligence turn to Ulliance for help.  Ulliance has expert trainers that can help you help your staff.
